Wire Gauge Table

The table below shows the relationship between U.K. Standard Wire Gauge (SWG) and American Wire Gauge (AWG). Brushless motor wind data is usually specified using AWG magnet wire but SWG is most easily obtainable in the U.K.

SWG (in the gauges of interest: 20-30) is usually one number larger than AWG. To convert AWG to SWG:

  • find the AWG size in the centre column and read off the diameter value from the 4th column (to the right of the wire number)
  • find the nearest diameter in the 1st column and read off the SWG number from the centre column
For example: 20 AWG is 0.032inch diameter and this corresponds to 21 SWG.
