Voltage Upconverters

A voltage upconverter use a switching regulator with small inductor to boost a low voltage up to a more usable voltage. For example, to power a 12V model rail motor from a single LiPo cell (3.7V nominal). This often simplifies installation and charging - only a single cell to be charged instead of a multi-cell battery with the consequent need to balance.

However, you don't get something for nothing! Although upconverters are efficient, you will loose approx 10% of the battery capacity and the current talen from the battery is N x output current, where N is the conversion ratio - e.g. for a 3.7V to 12V converter with 250mAh being taken by the motor, the LiPo current is 12/3.7 x 250 = approx 800mA.

See Regulators for a list of upconverters that we stock.
