Flight Line PlansTM : Models for AR6400

Flight Line Plans are a well-respected producer of electric R/C and free flight aeroplane plans. Designs are available in several categories: Micro Models, Models for AR6400, SmartDarts, Flying Wings, Sports Aerobatic, Vintage and Trainers. Flight Line Plans also provide kit packs for some of the micron designs - these comprise materials, additional drawings and a cutting template. Some designs are available as complete kits.

These micro models are designed to use the Spektrum AR6400 module or similar 3 function R/C. They are intended for indoor flying or outside flight in sensible conditions. Construction is a composite of depron and balsa with colouring applied using thinned acrylic paint or poster pens.

In keeping with the Flight Line PlansTM philosophy of promoting construction, all designs are available as a plan only. A laser cut kit of parts plus wheels and control linkages is also available for Chirp vs and SkyDart vs, use the checkbox on the 'Options' tab to select the kit.

Flight Line Plans Chirp vs

'Chirp vs' is an 'Old Timer' style indoor and garden micron model for the Spektrum AR6400 or similar 3 function R/C. It is based on the electric free-flight Chirp.

Chirp vs may be power by a brushed or brushless motor, both with a gearbox driving a GWS 5x3 propeller. The brushed power system is connected directly to the AR6400 or PKZ3351 ESC output and an external ESC is required to drive the micro brushless motor. Chirp vs flies very well on the brushed motor but the brushless provides just a bit extra 'go' for aerobatics. The complete system is operated from a single LiPo cell.

It is remarkable how well this model flies on just a few of watts of power and will loop and stall turn easily.

The Chirp vs plan is annotated with building instructions and control setup. For the full kit, select the Kit Pack of CNC cut parts on the Options tab.

Flight Line Plans WattNext

WattNext is a miniature aerobatic plane for the Spekrum AR6400 or Parkzone PKZ3351 receiver modules. WattNext has spectacular performance in either 3 or 4-function mode to control ailerons, elevator, (optionally) rudder and throttle via an external ESC, all from a single Lipo cell. The model would suit capable flyers either for outside use or indoors in a sports hall.

With a span of 16.5" (420mm) it is powered by an AP03 7500Kv brushless outrunner motor driving a U-80 or GWS 3x2 prop supplied from a 250mAh Lipo. Radio is either the Spektrum AR6400 or Parkzone PKZ3351 integrated receiver and 2 x servo module. An external servo and external brushless ESC complete the R/C equipment.

Flight times can be in the ~7+ minutes range and the all up weight is only around 32 grams. Construction is mainly Depron with a balsa fuselage and local balsa strengthening. The finished model benefits from colouring with acrylic paint or marker pen.

As with other Flight Line PlansTM designs, it's remarkable how well this model flies on around only 6 or 7 watts of power and despite its size it flies in an exceptionally stable yet aerobatic fashion. WattNext is capable of all rolling and looping manoeuvres and inverted flight and can be flown both fast and slow due to its light wing loading and high power to weight ratio. Take off distance is about a metre.

The WattNext plan is annotated with building instructions and control setup. WattNext can be built in aileron/elevator form or, for more fun, as a 'full house' rudder/elevator/aileron model.

Specifications:

  • Wingspan: 16.5" (420mm)
  • Flying Weight: 1.1oz (32gm typical) - option dependant
  • Wing Loading: ~2.1oz/sqft (7.3g/dm15g2
  • Controls: 3 or 4 (Ailerons, Elevator, Throttle, optional Rudder)
  • Flight Time: 7+ minutes

Flight Line Plans Burd Dawg

Burd Dawg is a lightweight cartoon scale version of the US Spotter plane from WWII suitable for the Vapor receiver module, Spektrum AR6400 or similar 3-function micro R/C to control rudder, elevator and motor speed.

The 15" (380mm) span Burd Dawg is designed for indoor or outside flying in light wind conditions. It is Flight Line PlansTM first 'International Project' and Flight Line PlansTM recognises the invaluable assistance provided by Ruediger Schmidt in the development and testing program.

The plan shows details of 3 motor options: a direct brushed motor; a geared brushed motor and a brushless outrunner motor powered from a single Lipo cell of up to 130 mAh capacity. Radio is specified as a micro 2.4 GHz system; ideally the integrated RX /servo/ESC Vapor module PKZ3351 or the Spektrum AR6400 which will operate a brushed motor direct or allow connection of an external ESC for the brushless option. Additional information is shown on how to connect and program the Vapor module, which can be salvaged from a redundant donor plane or purchased as a new replacement spare part.

Flight times are in the 7 minutes plus range and the all up weight is around 17 grams. Construction is from depron and balsa with colouring applied using thinned acrylic craft paint. Typical marking details are also depicted on the plan.

Specifications:

  • Wingspan: 15" (380mm)
  • Flying Weight: 0.6oz (17g)
  • Wing Loading: ~2.8oz/sqft
  • Controls: 3 (Rudder, Elevator, Throttle)
  • Flight Time: 7+ minutes

A number of options for Flight Line Plans Burd Dawg may be purchased at discounted prices. Selecting an option will add its price to the total for the plan. A hardware pack comprising depron, balsa and material for control linkages will be available shortly. Styro spray paint or Zig Posterman pens are ideal for decorating this depron model.

Flight Line Plans PE100

PE 100 is a real fun hack whether you want to fly it just as a sports model or as a trainer. It offers a docile performance with 3-function R/C using the Spektrum AR6400 or Parkzone PKZ3351 to control rudder, elevator and throttle via an external ESC, all from a single Lipo cell. The model would suit novice flyers either for outside use or indoors in a sports hall.

With a span of 18.5" (470mm) it's powered by a 2g brushless outrunner motor driving a GWS 2.5" prop supplied from a 200-240mAh Lipo although 130 and 70 mAh sizes have also been used. The integrated R/C module incorporates the RX and 2 servos and allows connection of a single cell 3A ESC. Flight times can be in the ~15+ minutes range and the all up weight is only around 28 grams. Construction is mainly depron with a balsa/depron fuselage and local balsa strengthening.

Two wing variants are detailed on the plan; a simple flat plate section and the curious Kline-Fogleman section KFm2 which is no more difficult to make, yet noticeably stiffer. If you haven't come across this before it's worth the experience. The wing is retained by a couple of small elastic bands to offer a little more crash resilience and allows for easy exchange between the wing types.

It's intriguing how well this model flies on only 5 watts of power and it truly deserves the accolade of being 'Whisper Quiet'. No one could ever complain that it's a noisy model. Don't expect PE 100 to be capable of aerobatics, although it does loop and can just be made to roll but it's not elegant! It's best just stooging around or intermittently powering to height and gliding back down, or doing touch and goes off a fine surface. If you have space to fly from your garden, try it.

The PE100 plan is annotated with building instructions and control setup. ESC connection instructions are provided for both AR6400 and PKZ3351 (Vapor module) receiver modules.

Specifications:

  • Wingspan: 18.5" (470mm)
  • Flying Weight: -1oz (~28g)
  • Wing Loading: ~2.5oz/sqft (7.6g/dm15g2
