Until recently, magnetic actuators were the only option for sub 30gm micro models. The advent of tiny servos and module systems like the AR6400 have lowered the bar, but for really small model aircraft, actuators are the only solution. Coupled with a good receiver (e.g. the DT DSM2 Actuator Receivers), magnetic actuators make it possible to build and fly model aircraft with auw down to 2 or 3 gm.
The actuators listed below are presented in order of increasing torque and weight.
The lightest commercially available actuator but requires assembling into the control surface. Resistance 75 ohms, weight 0.07g, I.D. 3mm, O.D. 3.8mm. Supplied as actuator coil with 12cm leads and separate 2 x 1.5mm N50 magnets.
Hinge Actuator: at 0.23gm this is the lightest pre-assembled magnetic actuator for micro R/C flying. Wire leads are about 18 cm length and require soldering onto the receiver pads. Self Centering. Torque vs weight ratio is good! 150 Ohm coil, 0.06mm copper magnet wire.
The MicroAct weighs approx 0.4g. It as 16cm (approx) leads with
nano-connector - plugs right into the Micro9 receiver.
This version of the actuator can be used in hinges and has plastic flanges
under the base to fix to rudder or elevator if desired.
A 1.1gm mini sized actuator suitable for indoor model aircraft. 10mm diameter and supplied with a 1.27mm pitch connector compatible with DT actuator receivers.
The MiniAct weighs approx 1.1 g and provides ample power for most
indoor R/C aircraft.
